Method note
On 1,000 held-out faces from the Kaggle niten19 Face Shape Dataset (CC0), the photo detector matched the dataset label 58.8% of the time across five shapes (oval, round, square, heart and oblong), where chance is 20%. That 58.8% is a limitation, not a promise of accuracy. Diamond and triangle were not in that test. The tape quiz measures hairline to chin, while the photo uses face landmarks, so the two can disagree — see how we measure.

How it works
1. Add a photo or use your camera
Look straight at the lens, pull your hair back and keep a neutral expression. Good light from the front matters more than camera quality.
2. We measure four lines
The detector places points on a photo and compares four measurements. Face length in the photo is the landmark length: the forehead landmark to the chin, adjusted, divided by cheekbone width. The quiz's length is hairline to chin. Those are different measurements, so the two tools can disagree. See how we measure.
| Measurement | Where it is taken |
|---|---|
| Forehead width | Across the forehead landmarks, as a share of cheekbone width |
| Cheekbone width | Across the outer cheekbone landmarks |
| Jaw width | From the jaw-angle landmark on one side to the other, as a share of cheekbone width |
| Face length | Landmark length: forehead landmark to chin, adjusted, divided by cheekbone width. The quiz measures hairline to chin. |
3. You get your shape — and what to do with it
Your result shows your closest shape, the runner-up, the ratios behind it, and links to haircuts, glasses and beard styles that balance that shape.
The seven face shapes at a glance
| Shape | Key proportions | Quick tell |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Length about 1.5× width; forehead slightly wider than jaw | Balanced, softly rounded jaw |
| Round | Length ≈ width; soft jaw | Fullest at the cheeks, no sharp angles |
| Square | Length ≈ width; forehead, cheeks and jaw similar | Strong, angular jaw |
| Heart | Forehead widest, narrow pointed chin | Wide temples, tapering chin |
| Diamond | Cheekbones widest; forehead and jaw narrower | High, wide cheekbones |
| Oblong | Length clearly greater than width; sides fairly straight | Long face, similar widths top to bottom |
| Triangle | Jaw widest, forehead narrowest | Broad jaw, narrower temples |
Why your face shape matters
Face shape is a shortcut for choosing what frames your face. Stylists use it to pick haircut length and volume, opticians use it to suggest frame shapes, and barbers use it to shape beards. The general principle is contrast and balance: add width where the face is narrow, add length where it is short, and soften strong angles with curves.
It is a guide, not a rule. Your hair texture, features and personal style matter too — the shape just gives you a smart starting point.
Prefer to answer questions?
If you would rather not use a photo, the face shape quiz asks eight questions about your proportions and gives you an estimate using just a mirror.
Frequently asked questions
How does the face shape detector work?
It finds landmarks on your face—forehead, cheekbones, jawline and chin—measures their widths and your face length, then estimates your face shape from those facial landmarks. Results are a guide, not a diagnosis.
Is the face shape detector free?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and no email address, and you can use it as many times as you like.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo is analyzed in your browser and never uploaded to our servers. Closing the tab discards it.
Does it work for men?
Yes. Face shape is based on bone structure, so the same seven shapes apply to everyone. Men's results include beard and haircut suggestions.
What if I get two shapes?
That is normal. Many faces are a blend, such as oval-heart or square-oblong. We show your closest match and the runner-up so you can read both guides.
How should I take the photo?
Face the camera straight on, hair pulled back, neutral expression, even light, and no glasses. Hold the phone at eye level, not above or below.
What face shape do I have?
Upload a front-facing photo on this page. The detector estimates oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong or triangle from facial landmarks. If two shapes are close, it shows both instead of forcing one. Results are a guide, not a diagnosis.
Is a face shape test or calculator different from this detector?
A test or calculator usually means questions or measurements you enter yourself. This detector reads a photo. They answer the same question: the face shape quiz is the question version, and this page is the photo version. Neither is a medical measurement.
Why does the quiz disagree with the photo?
They measure length differently. The photo uses landmark length: the forehead landmark to the chin, adjusted, divided by cheekbone width. The quiz measures hairline to chin. Photo angle and how you answer can also shift the result, so the two can disagree. See how we measure.
