What is an oblong face shape?
Oblong means a long face with straight sides and no single widest point.
An oblong face is clearly longer than it is wide. The forehead, the cheekbones and the jaw sit close to one width, and the sides stay fairly straight instead of curving in toward the chin. Long face and rectangular face are the same outline. Styling, if you want it, adds width and interrupts the vertical.
The mirror quiz and the photo detector do not measure that length the same way. The quiz asks you to judge hairline-to-chin length. The photo uses face landmarks. If they disagree, read how we measure before you pick a cut. You can check with the face shape detector or the mirror quiz.
How to tell if your face is oblong
Match the three widths first. Length is the second check.
- The sides of the face look straight more than curved
- Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close to the same width
- In the mirror, length is clearly past "about as long as it is wide", into the longer group (about 1.5 times the width, or more)
- The forehead is often tall, which makes the vertical look even longer
That "about 1.5 times" line is the mirror description, the same bin as the quiz. It is not a cutoff the photo tool computes. A photo can still place a long-looking face nearer the middle of its own scale.
Oblong or rectangle
Same geometry. A sharper jaw corner is not a second shape.
If another guide calls your face a rectangle, stay on this page. The outline they mean is long, with straight sides, and with the forehead, cheekbones and jaw close in width. The split people argue about is whether the jaw corner looks sharp or slightly worn. That changes a beard line. It does not change the face shape, and it does not get its own URL here.
Oblong vs oval
The deciding test is the jaw, not the length.
Both can look long in a mirror. Put one finger on the forehead at its widest, one on the cheekbone, and one on the jaw.
- Oval: the jaw finger sits in from the forehead, and the chin curves.
- Oblong: the three fingers land on almost one vertical line, and the sides do not curve in.
If only the length looks long and the jaw is narrower, read the oval guide. Length alone will mislabel a long oval as oblong. The full comparison is on oval vs oblong.
Oblong vs square
Same even widths. The length is what splits them.
A square face has straight sides, an angular jaw, and a forehead, cheekbones and jaw of similar width. So does oblong. In the mirror, square is the "about as long as it is wide" answer. Oblong is the "much longer, about 1.5 times or more" answer, with those same even widths. Length alone does not decide the result: the mirror quiz combines all eight answers, including jaw angle and widths. Open oval if the jaw also narrows.
Oblong vs diamond
Diamond is widest at the cheekbones. Oblong is not.
A diamond face can also look long, which is why the two get confused. On a diamond the cheekbones pass both the forehead and the jaw by a clear margin, and the chin narrows. On an oblong face the cheekbones do not win. If your cheekbone finger is the one that sticks out, leave this page.
Oblong vs round
A soft chin does not make a long face round.
A round face is about as long as it is wide, and the sides curve. Oblong is longer, and the sides stay straight. A rounded chin on a long, straight face is still oblong. Round fails the length check before the chin matters.
Is an oblong face attractive?
The outline is not a grade.
Nothing here ranks faces. Oblong names where the width sits and how the length compares with it. A long face is not a better or worse result than oval, square or round. If two tools say "between oblong and oval", read both guides. The blend is a normal measurement, not a flaw to fix.
Best hairstyles for an oblong face
Width at cheek level, and something that cuts across the forehead.
A centre part on long straight hair continues the vertical. A side part, a fringe, or waves at the cheek break it. Full details, including what to ask for in the chair, are on hairstyles for an oblong face.
Women
| Style | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Full or curtain bangs | Cross the tall forehead so the eye stops before the chin. |
| Shoulder-length waves | Put the width beside the cheeks, not below the collarbone. |
| Chin-length bob | A horizontal edge shortens the line the face draws. |
| Side volume | Layers at cheek level widen the middle. |
Men
| Style | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Side part, medium sides | Keeps width. A skin fade removes the width you are short of. |
| Fringe or French crop | Covers forehead height. |
| Textured, low top | Movement without adding crown height. |
| Classic taper | Length stays moderate all the way around. |
Cuts that fight the shape: very long centre-parted hair, and a tall pompadour or quiff. Both add to the length you already have.
Best glasses for an oblong face
Use the frame to cover vertical space. Keep the catalogue on the glasses page.
A frame that reaches the temples adds width. A deeper lens fills the gap between brow and cheek so the face looks less like one tall column. Set the top rim on the brow, not above it, or the frame becomes extra forehead. Small, narrow or shallow frames leave a long stretch of face above and below.
Frame-by-frame fit, including sunglasses, is on glasses for an oblong face.
Beard styles for an oblong face
Fuller cheeks, a short chin.
A short beard that fills the sides adds the width the bone does not have. Grow the chin long, or point it, and you extend the vertical. The shape-specific cuts are on beard styles for an oblong face.
Makeup for an oblong face
Shade the top and the bottom. Keep colour horizontal.
Makeup on this page is a placement note, not a separate guide. Shade along the hairline and under the chin tip to shorten the column. Sweep blush straight back toward the ears, not up the temple. Highlight the outer cheek, where you want width. Skip a long vertical highlight down the nose.
| Area | Placement | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hairline | A soft shade blended down a little | Shortens a tall forehead |
| Chin tip | Shade under the tip, not down the neck | Stops the chin drawing longer |
| Cheeks | A short horizontal blush | Width without a diagonal |
| Temples | Leave them | Colour there climbs the face |

It's a guide, not a rule
The tests above name the outline. They do not grade it.
A long face can still have a slightly soft chin or one width a little off the other two. Use the finger test before you change a cut. The hair, glasses and beard notes add width or break a vertical line. They do not move the bone. If the mirror and the photo disagree, read both this page and the neighbour it named. How we measure keeps the two rulers separate.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have an oblong face shape?
In the mirror, the face is clearly longer than it is wide, the forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close to the same width, and the sides run fairly straight. Rectangle and long face are names for that same outline.
Is a rectangle face the same as oblong?
Yes. Some guides split them by how sharp the jaw corner looks. This site keeps one page, because the lengths and widths match.
What is the difference between oblong and oval?
Oval's jaw is narrower than the forehead and the chin curves. Oblong keeps the three widths close and the sides straight. Both can look about one and a half times as long in a mirror, so length alone does not decide it.
Oblong or square?
Both have straight sides and even widths. Square is about as long as it is wide. Oblong keeps that even width and is clearly longer.
What hairstyles suit an oblong face?
Add width around the cheeks and break the vertical: curtain or full bangs, shoulder-length waves, a chin-length bob, and for men a fringe or low textured top. Skip a long centre part and a tall pompadour.
Is an oblong face attractive?
No face shape is more attractive than another. Oblong only names a long outline with even widths. It is not a score.
What suits an oblong face
Hairstyles
- Fringe or bangs — A fringe shortens the visible length of the face.
- Chin-length cut with side volume — Width at the sides balances extra length.
- Short cut with fuller sides — Volume at the sides rather than on top keeps the face from looking longer.
Avoid
- Tall volume on top with flat sides — Height adds length to a face that is already long.
Glasses frames
- Oversized frames — Deep, wide frames cover more vertical space and shorten the face.
- Bold square frames — Strong horizontal lines add width.
- Decorative temples — Detail at the sides draws the eye outward.
Avoid
- Small narrow frames — Shallow frames leave more face length visible.
Earrings
- Studs — Small earrings add no extra vertical length.
- Wide hoops — Circles add horizontal width to a long face.
- Cluster or button earrings — Rounded shapes at ear level widen the mid-face.
Avoid
- Long linear drops — Vertical lines make a long face look longer.
Necklines
- Crew neck — A high round line shortens the visual length.
- Boat neck — A horizontal neckline widens the frame around the face.
- Turtleneck — Fabric up the neck reduces visible length below the jaw.
Avoid
- Deep V-neck — A long V extends the vertical line of an already long face.
