What is the golden ratio in a face?

The golden ratio, often written as the Greek letter φ (phi), is approximately 1.618. It appears in mathematics and has been used in design and discussions of facial proportions. But a mathematical ratio does not establish an objective standard of facial beauty or health. There is no single perfect face measurement, and real facial features vary widely.

This free calculator simply helps you look at the geometry of your own photograph. It displays a face-length estimate divided by cheekbone width, with a visual reference at 1.618. The line is a comparison point, not a target that you are expected to reach.

How we calculate the measurements

Our on-device face landmark model detects points on a front-facing photo. The cheekbone width is estimated from the two side-of-face landmarks. The length estimate runs from the upper forehead landmark to the chin and uses the same adjustment as our face shape detector. This is an approximation based on visible landmarks, not the true hairline-to-chin distance or a measurement in millimetres.

We also show forehead width divided by cheekbone width and jaw width divided by cheekbone width. Those two ratios are useful for interpreting the outline of a face, but neither one has a scientifically established golden-ratio ideal. The values are shown independently, without an overall rating.

Reading the ratio chart

The green marker represents your estimated face length-to-cheekbone-width ratio. The other marker shows φ at 1.618. The horizontal scale is a visual comparison range, not a success meter. You might see a ratio smaller or larger than 1.618; neither is inherently preferable. The result can change between photos because camera position, perspective and expression affect where landmarks appear.

Tips for a reliable comparison

  1. Use one well-lit, front-facing photo with your chin and forehead visible.
  2. Keep the camera near eye level and avoid extreme close-up wide-angle selfies.
  3. Pull hair away from the face edges if possible.
  4. Retake the photo if you see a warning about tilt, turn or face size.

If you want to understand how these proportions relate to oval, round, square, heart and other face shapes, read how we measure or use the no-photo face shape quiz. The purpose of this calculator is to help you explore facial geometry, not to recommend changing your appearance.

Privacy and limitations

Your photo is processed on your own device; it is not uploaded to our servers for this calculator. We do not store the results of the free calculation. The first use downloads a face landmark model, so an internet connection is normally needed. The measurement is based on a two-dimensional image and is not suitable for clinical, forensic or biometric identification purposes. Learn more in our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does a ratio of 1.618 mean a perfect face?

No. Phi is a mathematical constant, not a validated attractiveness or health standard. We do not grade your appearance.

Why does the calculated number change between selfies?

Photo angle, distance, camera lens, expression and landmark estimation all affect the apparent lengths and widths.

Is this the same as a physical face measurement?

No. The length is estimated from visible facial landmarks in a photograph, with an approximate adjustment for the forehead. It is not the precise hairline-to-chin distance.

Is the golden ratio calculator free and private?

Yes. It works in your browser without a purchase, sign-up or photo upload to our servers.
